Abstract:

It is seen during the excavation and restoration works in Zeytinliada, located in the district of Erdek, in Balıkesir province between 2007-2016 that the architecture on the island started to gain importance with the Byzantine domination after the Roman Period. The most concrete example of this situation is the presence of the Virgin Mary Monastery. Ceramic finds among the archaeological remains found in the excavations are also important for the history of the island and its surrounding. Zeytinliada has very rich examples of ceramics with a wide range of period and technical differences from ancient period to the Turkish-Islamic Period. Late Roman Red Slip Wares in Zeytinliada consists of African Red Slip Wares, Phokaia Red Slip Wares and Late Roman Light Colored Wares. In the study, 46 ceramic pieces were evaluated, containers were grouped chronologically and then sub-grouped. In addition to the imported ceramics revealing the commercial relations of the region such as Africa and Phokaia, the variety of forms of Late Roman Light Colored wares similar to the forms of the largest production centers making up the densest group and the fact that they have never been found before are of great importance in terms of providing information about the Late Roman Ceramics of Mysia Region.
