Abstract:

Students registered in the Department of German Teaching experience a problem with German speech in the preparatory class of the Higher School of Foreign Languages. They have difficulty expressing their feelings and thoughts in a foreign language. Therefore, they are complained of being unable to speak a foreign language. For this purpose, a German-speaking event was organized outside the class with a teacher who is native German and who does not know Turkish for their practices, to guide students to speak, to acquire speech skills and habits, to encourage them to speak and to practice what they learned. This event continued for a total of three weeks, independently of the curriculum in a campus cafe away from the classroom, for 1.5 hours each week. In this event, 7 students from the German language preparation regularly participated voluntarily. 30 Questions Survey are prepared to learn the general views and perceptions of students about the event. The student interview questions were carried out parallelly. After each speech event, the field notes were kept by the German internship teacher. Most of the participants said that communicating with a mother-language German teacher in the German speaking hour event improved their German speaking skills, language use and word knowledge.
