Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın sanat anlayışının temel dinamiklerinden biri kendi hayatını ya da dönemini folklorik malzeme olarak eserlerinde kullanmamasıdır. Yazar, gerçek hayattaki kişi, mekân, olay, nesne ya da durumlara simgesel anlam kazandırmak suretiyle eserlerinde yeniden anlamlandırır. Sıradan bir nesneyi simge hâline getirirken onu diğer yazarlardan/şairlerden ayıran özelliği sahip olduğu bakış açısıdır. Tanpınar’ın eserlerinde bütün eşyalar, kişiler mekânlar vb. imajlarıyla birlikte gelir. Daha sonra bu imajlar faklı imajlara dönüşür ve giderek genişleyerek simgesel bir unsur hâline gelirler. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar simge kullanmada her ne kadar mutlakçı olmasa da kurgusal eserlerinde okuyucunun karşısına geniş bir simgesel malzeme çıkar. Yazarın eserlerinde mitlerden, dinî ve edebî kaynaklardan, sanat eserlerinden beslenen evrensel simgeler olduğu gibi sadece kendisine has simgeler de bulunur. Bu çalışmada, Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü romanında rüya/zamana ait sahneler simgesel bir okumayla yorumlanacaktır.
