Abstract:

Today, in addition to the physical and mental efforts of the employees of the organizations that want to be successful in the competitive environment, the emotional labor of these employees is extremely important in the sectors where face-to-face communication is established. In the health sector, which is one of these sectors, the emotional labor of the employees plays an important role in the success of the companies. In addition to their emotional labor, health workers experience physical exhaustion due to the heavy workload in the organization they are part of, and mental and emotional exhaustion if they do not receive the reward for their efforts. However, these employees may not always be able to conduct their work and family lives in a balanced way, and this may cause various conflicts in their family or work lives. In this respect, the role of work-family conflict in the relationship between emotional labor and burnout levels of healthcare workers was evaluated in the study. In this context, an online questionnaire was applied to 161 healthcare workers who were determined by convenience sampling method in hospitals operating in Istanbul and Balıkesir. Multiple correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were applied with the obtained data. As a result of the analyzes applied, it was determined that the effect of emotional labor on burnout levels was fully mediated by work-family conflict. However, the fact that the mediating role of work-family conflict in the relationship between emotional labor and burnout is not examined in the literature highlights the originality of this study.
