Abstract:

In this study, the skills of the 8th grade students to summarize narrative texts were comparatively studied by some variables. For this purpose, the summary skills of high school 8th class students have been tried to determine whether they differ according to reading and listening learning areas, gender, school success level, the number of books they read monthly, the educational status of their parents and their families and their monthly income status. The study conducted in the screening model is done according to the qualitative research model. The study was conducted with students of 8th grade in the Central District. Secondary schools in the central district are divided into three levels: high, middle and low. The level of success is set for a total of four schools, one of the high and second, including two of the low schools. The study material was used by two narrative texts, one listening and one reading field. Students are asked to get rid of these texts. The output summaries were evaluated according to the Scale of Evaluation of Summary Textes developed by Read (2011). In the analysis of the data, t-Test for Independent Measures and One Way Anova were used. At the end of the study, the student’s summary skills varied according to the field of learning, gender, school success level, father’s educational status; the mother’s educational status, the number of books they read monthly and their families’ monthly income status.
