Amasya geçmişten günümüze, Anadolu’yu doğudan-batıya, kuzeyden-güneye bağlayan, ticaret, göç ve savaş yollarının merkezinde bulunan, jeopolitik ve stratejik yönden önemli konuma sahip bir şehirdir. Kirazlıdere Mahallesi ise, Amasya şehir merkezinin kuzeyinde kurulmuşeski yerleşim alanlarından birisidir. Şehir, Hititlerden başlayarak çeşitli uygarlıklara ev sahipliği yapmış ve Bizans döneminde de Piskoposluk merkezi olarak kullanılmıştır. Şehir merkezinde Amasya Müze Müdürlüğü başkanlığında çeşitli tarihlerde yapılan kurtarma kazılarında; Şamlar, İhsaniye, Kurşunlu, Dere ve Kirazlıdere Mahallelerinde Roma ve Bizans Dönemine ait birçok mezar örneği ortaya çıkarılmıştır (Özdemir ve Doğanbaş, 2011). Erken Bizans Dönemi ile (MS 330-726) tarihlendirilen Kirazlıdere nekropol alanı; dikdörtgen formda, düz kapak taşlarıyla örtülmüş toplam 22 adet mezardan oluşmaktadır. Kirazlıdere nekropol alanında bulunan bu mezarlar 5. yüzyıldan itibaren Amasya’da hüküm süren Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu (Bizans) döneminde yaşamış ilk Hristiyanlara aittir. 2014 yılı Kirazlıdere Mahallesi nekropol alanında kurtarma kazısı sonucu ortaya çıkarılan mezarlar, iskeletler ve bu iskeletlere ait özel eşyalar çalışmamızın konusunu oluşturmaktadır.
