During its occupation of western Anatolia, Greece was in need of a large number of soldiers. A certain part of this need was attempted to be fulfilled with the conscription of Ottoman Greeks. For this purpose, Greece initiated an intense “Megali Idea” propaganda to takes Ottoman Greeks under arms, who were Ottoman citizens. The Athens Government called upon the Ottoman Greeks in the occupied territories with mandates issued following the occupation of Izmir.
