The issue about the existence and nature of God is one of the essential problems of Islamic thought. Though the Creator and Director of the universe cannot be sensate there is no doubt that He has an existence beyond the mind. Due to the fact that the divine self and nature cannot be perceived by senses Islamic thinkers followed the concepts that are related to Him in the Qu’ran in order to know Him. Even though they had the same starting point they suggested different ideas with different reasons and a clash of ideas emerged. Actually the structure of the God image is the determinant factor in human’s view on himself, life, and nature. In this paper, I examine the God concept and the resulting problems together with their solutions according to the ideas of the first main schools of thought that emerged in the beginning era (Tadwin era) of Islamic thought, namely the Ehl-i Rey and Salafiyyah and will connect this with the present in a critical way.
