According to Sufis senses and reason are not enough to obtain knowledge altough they are two sources of knowledge. To the Sufis the reason is limited and the limited one is evidence for the limited one. So, according to this understanding the divine knowledge can only be acquired by heart (qalb). For that reason the heart must be careful against the desires which are motivated by the Satan and Nafs. By doing this, it must be purified all the worldly wishes. If a person apply all those things to his life, God provides him the knowledge of gnosis (ma’rifa). The gnosis, too, teaches that God cannot be known. As a conclusion, our examination of Muhasibi’s sources of knowledge shows us that Muhisibi defines the sources of knowledge as senses, reason, nass and heart. İt is obvious that this understanding of Muhasibi has contributed a significant role in the shaping of understanding knowledge (ma’rifa) in the Sufism.
