Birinci Dünya savaşı şiiri söz konusu olduğunda, akla ilk gelen yer Batı Cephesi olacaktır. Bunun sebebi ünlü şairlerin büyük çoğunlukla Batı Cephesinde görev yapmış olmaları ve eserlerini buralarda yaşadıkları savaş tecrübelerinden derlemiş olmalarındandır. Ünlü şairlerin ve daha sonra savaş şairi olarak şöhret kazanan şairlerin Batı Cephesinde bulunması tesadüf müdür bilinmez ama konuyu çok iyi bilmeyen birisi tüm savaşın bu bölgenin dışında olmadığı izlenimine kapılabilir. Ancak, Mezopotamya cephesinde de büyük muharebeler olmuş ve savaşın sonucunda sözü geçen bölgede beşten fazla devlet kurulmuştur. Bu bölgede de birkaç şairlik şöhreti olan İngiliz ve Avustralyalı asker şair bulunmuştur. Bu şairlerin şiirleri çok geç denecek bir zamana kadar ne yazık ki kitaplaştırılmamıştır. Bu sebepten, Mezopotamya bölgesinde yapılmış olan muharebeler tarihi bir olgu olması dışında pek bilinmemektedir. Hâlbuki İngiliz, Avustralyalı ve Hint süvari ve katır birlikleri savaşa olanca güçleriyle destek vermişlerdir. Bu bölgede yürütülen muharebelerin büyük çoğunluğu süvari saldırıları şeklinde gelişmiş; zaferin kazanılmasında atlar çok önemli bir rol oynamışlardır. Bu çalışma tarihi bir olgunun edebi eserlere yansımasını ele almakla birlikte özellikle atlar ve atların bu mücadeledeki yerlerini ve önemlerini gösteren savaş şiirlerini incelemiştir. Bu çalışma ayrıca, bir imge ve araç olarak atların İngiliz ve Avustralyalı şairler tarafından ne kadar farklı algılandığını göstermek açısından ilginç bir çalışmadır.
When it comes to the poem of the First World War, the first place that comes to mind will be the Western Front. This is due to the fact that the famous poets have mostly served in the Western Front and have collected their works from the war experiences they lived here. It is unknown that the famous poets and then the poets who gained fame as war poets are at the Western Front, but someone who does not know the subject very well can get the impression that the whole war is not outside this area. However, there have also been major struggles on the front of Mesopotamia and more than five states have been established in the region that was mentioned as a result of the war. In this area there were also several British and Australian soldier poets, who were famous for poetry. Unfortunately, the poems of these poems have not been written until a very late time. For this reason, the struggles that were held in the region of Mesopotamia are unknown except as a historic fact. However, British, Australian and Indian cavaliers and Katar troops supported their forces when they were in war. When the subject matter is World War I poetry, the Western Front comes to mind in the first place. The reason for this comes from the fact that famous poets of WWI overwhelmingly served on the Western Front and reflected their Western Front experiences in their literary outputs. It is not certain whether these famous poets and future war poets served there as a result of a coincidence or not, a reader who is not familiar with World War I history may think that the whole warfare took place on the Western Front. However, there had been though battles in Mesopotamia where more than five new states were founded thereafter. A few English and Australian soldiers who were known as professional poets fought in the salient. It is rather unfortunate that the poetry produced by those men of talent were not put into a book until a time which could be considered rather recent. Therefore all that happened in Mesopotamia Campaign are nothing but historical facts to many. Australian and Indian cavalry corps fought tooth and nail by their soldiers from motherland, England. The battles conducted in the salient are realized mostly as cavalry charges; and horses have a pivotal role and significance in the victory. Handling the reflection of a historical fact into literary works, this article also examines the war poems, especially the ones which put emphasis on the place of horses in battle fields and their significance. In addition, this study is noteworthy in terms of reflecting how differently horses were viewed by English and Australian riders.
