Abstract:

Textbooks constitute the primary materials used in the Turkish course where the development of language skills (listening/watching, reading, speaking, writing) are aimed. The development of these language skills is carried out through the texts selected by the authors for Turkish textbooks. In order to determine the texts to be selected, there are text selection criteria in the Turkish Language Teaching Curriculum. In these criteria, it is stated that some changes can be made in the texts to be selected for the textbooks. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the manipulations made to the modified texts in Turkish textbooks. The research was conducted by document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. The data source of the study consists of a total of 40 narrative texts that are stated to be shortened or simplified in six Turkish textbooks taught in the 2021-2022 academic year. The texts were obtained from the bibliographies of the textbooks for data collection. Descriptive analysis method was used in the data analysis process. The findings of the study showed that some of the modifications made were not specified in the texts and that modifications were generally made intuitively in the texts. It was seen that the droppings made in some texts negatively affected the flow and integrity of meaning, and it was determined that some changes and droppings were unnecessary. In addition, not all of the dropped sections in the texts were indicated with ellipses in parentheses.
