Abstract:

Islamist movements are one of the most influential factors on the Islamic world today. There are many Islamic movements with different understandings in the Islamic world. One of the most important of these movements is the Muslim Brotherhood movement based in Egypt. The purpose of this article is to argue that the Muslim Brotherhood movement is classified as a political Islamist movement. According to some of the studies in the literature, the Muslim Brotherhood is characterized as a fundamentalist movement, while according to some, it is a political Islamist movement. The main reason for this is that the difference between these two concepts is ignored. The terms political Islam and fundamentalist Islam have been used interchangeably in the literature, but this usage creates confusion. In this article, fundamentalist Islam and political Islam are analyzed comparatively in order to eliminate conceptual confusion. The Muslim Brotherhood movement has been historically examined and its political understanding has been described. The original value of this article is that it creates a more accurate field of evaluation in the analysis of Islamic movements
