Abstract:

To regional development, exports are an important policy tool. In general, it is believed that exports contribute to the development of the region and that developed regions take more share than exports. The aim of this study is to explore the development and export relationship in the Southeast Anadolu region in the period 1996-2010. The State Planning Authority (2003) has classified the provinces for the level of development as a development indicator. The export data was obtained from the Foreign Trade Council (DTM) and the Turkish Statistical Bureau (TÜIK). In this framework, the shares they receive from the exports of the provinces in the Southeast Anadolu (TRC) region, the region and Turkey are linked to the levels of socio-economic development. The study mainly focused on the socio-economic, geographical and demographic structure of the region. Later, on the basis of the statistical regional units classification (IBBS) system, the industry in the region, the level of socio-economic development of the region and public investments towards the region were studied. Finally, we discussed the structure and development of the region’s export and export development. After all, in Turkey and in the southeastern Anadolu region in general, the development levels of the provinces increased and the share they received from exports increased.
