İkinci Dünya Savaşı başında Almanya karşında yenilen Fransa mütareke imzaladı. Mütarekeden sonra donanmanın bir kısmı İngiltere’ye teslim oldu, bir kısmı batırıldı ve bir kısmı da Vichy Hükûmeti kontrolünde kaldı. İngiltere ve Özgür Fransa’nın, Vichy kontrolündeki Suriye’yi ele geçirmek maksadıyla harekât başlatmaları üzerine Beyrut’ta bulunan Fransız donanmasına ait on bir gemiden oluşan bir filotilla, İngilizlerin eline geçmemek için Temmuz 1941’de Türkiye’ye sığındı. Türkiye, teslim olan gemi ve personeli enterne etti ve söz konusu gemileri 1943 yılında Elan hariç satın aldı. Satışı yapılan gemi personeli ülkelerine gönderilirken, Elan gemisi ve personelinin enterne durumu İstanbul’da devam etti. Türkiye’de bulundukları süre içerisinde gemi ve personelinin ihtiyaçları Türk Donanması tarafından karşılandı. Türkiye, söz konusu gemiyi, 24 Ekim 1944’de Fransa Cumhuriyeti Geçici Hükûmetini tanıdıktan sonra serbest bıraktı.
At the beginning of World War II, France defeated by Germany signed a truce. After the armistice, one part of the navy surrendered to England, some were sunk and some remained under the control of the Vichy Government. When Britain and Free France, launched an operation to conquer Syria, who is under Vichy control, French navy flotilla consisted of 11 ships in Beirut, to avoid to pass into the hands of the British, take refuge to Turkey in July, 1941. Turkey, interned the ships and personnel surrendered and buy these ships except Elan boat, in 1943. While the ship's personnel were dispatch to their countries, the internment of the ship Elan and its personnel continued in Istanbul. The needs of the ship and its personnel during their stay in Turkey were provided by Turkish Navy. Turkey released this ship, after recognizing the Provisional Government of the French Republic on 24 October 1944.
