Abstract:

Tens of thousands of Turkish soldiers were captured during the First World War. Turkish soldiers, were mostly captured by the Russian and British armies, remained in captivity for a long time in remote geographies and climates they were not used to. The most difficult process for the soldiers captured by the Russians was their transportation to the prison camps. Prisoners were forced to travel long distances in freezing cold and far from the minimum living conditions. This process, in which many soldiers lost their lives, mostly ended in the camps in Siberia. The prisoners, who had to cope with serious problems even after they entered the camps, were freed to some extent thanks to the lack of authority caused by the Bolshevik Revolution. Those captured by the British, on the other hand, had to endure a life of oppressive captivity. They were completely isolated from the outside world during their transportation to the camps and during their stay in the camps. This led to a problem called Barbed Wire Psychosis among the prisoners of war.
