Berlin Duvarının çökmesi ve Sovyet Sosyalist Cumhuriyet Birliği’nin çözülmesinden sonra, küresel sistemik yapının derin bir değişime maruz kalması, küresel sistemik yapı ile ilintili yeni paradigmalara ihtiyacı doğurmuştu. Bunun için geleneksel uluslararası ilişkiler teorilerinin aşılması gerekiyordu. Huntington’ın “Medeniyetler Çatışması mı?” başlıklı makalesi veya tezi bu ihtiyaca cevap vermeye yönelik bir çalışma olarak ileri sürülmüştür. Huntington’ın çalışmasının tüm dünyada tartışma yaratması ve tartışmaların günümüzde bile güncelliğini koruması, tezin stratejik önemini gözler önüne sermektedir. Huntington’ın tezinin temel işlevlerinden biri Soğuk Savaş sonrası ortaya çıkan kaotik geçiş sürecini anlamlandırmaya çalışmaktı. Buna göre, ideolojik kutuplaşmaların yerini din odaklı medeniyetler arası gerilimler ve hatta çatışmaların alacağı haber veriliyordu. Bu genel amaç çerçevesinde, ilk olarak, Huntington’ın Medeniyetler Çatışması paradigması genel hatlarıyla ele alınacaktır. İkinci olarak, Huntington’ın medeniyet kavramına yüklediği anlam incelenecektir. Üçüncü olarak, İslam dinin medeniyetler çatışması paradigması içindeki yeri ve paradigmanın güçlü&zayıf boyutları eleştirel bir düzlemde tartışılacaktır.
