Abstract:

The museums, which were in the beginning only the places where objects were gathered and exhibited, have evolved from this object-oriented understanding in the historical process to a human-oriented understanding. This has transformed the museums into a widespread educational institution and made them a lifelong learning place. Today, museums are an important part of education. In our country, even though there are a lack of maneuver, this new function of the museums gets widespread. Although there are numerous studies on the use of museums in education, especially in some courses, there is not enough study on the geography course. The research is aimed at helping to eliminate this deficiency. It is important that as the planners and practitioners of the educational processes, the views of geographical teachers on the use of museums in geographical education are expressed. Research and geography teachers have been trying to reveal their views on the use of museums in geography education. For the research, the Necmettin Erbakan University of Social and Human Sciences Scientific Research Ethics Council received the necessary approval with the date of 16/04/2021 and resolution number 2021/293. Examples are used for the purposes of the study. In the determination of the teachers to be interviewed, different districts - center and tachra - and different types of schools were taken as a standard. For this purpose, a semi-configured meeting was held with 15 geographical teachers identified according to the principle of the volunteer. The data obtained was analyzed using the content analysis technique. According to the research findings, geographical teachers believe that the use of museums is useful in geographical education, they believe that museums have a lot of contribution to geographical education but despite all these contribution they believe that museums in our country have not been sufficiently benefited in geographical education, they have experienced many problems in the process of museum visits, primarily by bureaucratic obstacles and transport problems. It is also understood that they believe that the geography course is an extremely suitable course to use the museums and they believe that the numerous achievements / subjects included in the curriculum can be associated with the museums. In addition, it is clear that teachers did not cooperate sufficiently with the museums before their visit to the museum, did not do scheduled events before, during and after the visit to the museum.
