Abstract:

The study aims to provide a general framework on the New Urbanism Stream, a planning and design movement that emerged in the US in the early 1990s. In this direction, from the developments in urban design and planning throughout history, the emergence of the New Urbanism Stream, the theoretical bases, characteristics, principles, areas of application and levels have been studied. From the projects implemented in the U.S., the country where the stream emerged, examples were selected according to the level of implementation of the stream and the results of implementation were evaluated with theoretical data. It has been seen that the Stream largely designed new settlements and acted towards reducing environmental, economic and social problems as a whole through the physical arrangements made in these areas. Furthermore, it has been found that it is an elitist project that addresses the high-income group, despite the emphasis on the complex-used settlements for people with different economic levels and demographic characteristics, and that the complex-used use can be partially implemented. But it is also necessary to note that the Stream can be developed in the process and brings a urbanism understanding that can be adapted to different areas and levels.
