Abstract:

Poetry translation is the hardest and most controversial of the translation types. The characteristics of poetry and its connection to the content are the reasons for this difficulty. Poetry is not the language that attracts attention to the messenger; in other words, not to understand or link in the poem, we focus first on the language. It is not a language that is transparent and invisible as a means of communication as in the daily language, it is a language that has become perceived by the interventions on it. The relationship of the poem to the content is also different from the other kinds, because the poem produces its own meaning by its particular conception of the language, that is, the meaning of the poem is produced within the text itself without sending a non-poetic link. So there is no meaning and form that can be easily separated from each other in the poem. This is not the case in every poem, but the whole of modern poem, which is primarily symbolic poetry tradition, which is based on the language and meaning unity, shows this characteristic. It is a problem for the translation and for the form. There are so many literary and literary researchers who claim that the poetry cannot be translated. However, along with these discussions, the poem will be translated and continued to be translated. So what are the problems here? Is it possible to preserve the form and meaning at the same time? Does it sound like a poem? Open translation or cover translation? In this review, an example of a translation was examined with five different versions to find an answer to all these questions and revealed what problems were faced in the translation. Compared translations showed that although the form appears to be protected, this protection is missing. The translation of the poems is clearly behind. The cultural differences in terms of meaning, the different interpretation of the context and of course the source language have created a problem to be a sufficient judge. It is a poem that does not want to be translated or translated, and it is a poem that has to be translated.
