Osmanlı Devleti'nin sosyal ve ekonomik tarihiyle ilgili yapılan araştırmalarda faydalanılanönemli kaynaklardan birisi de "Nüfus Defterleri"dir. Bu defterler, sadece sayımı yapılan bölgelerdeki insanların isimlerini vermekle kalmamakta, ödeyecekleri vergilerden uğraştıkları mesleklere, çocuk sayılarından yaşlarına ve sağlık durumlarına kadar bir çok hususla ilgili bilgileri ihtiva etmektedir. Biz bu çalışmamızda, 1841 yılına ait 2919 ve 2920 numaralı iki nüfus defterine göre Söke Muhassıllığı'na bağlı Balat Kazası'nda yaşayan gayrimüslimlerin başta demografik durumu olmak üzere, ödedikleri cizye vergi oranlarına göre ekonomik durumlarını ve ikamet ettikleri bölgelerdeki uğraşı alanlarını değerlendirmeye çalıştık. Bunlara ilaveten, kayıtlara göre gayrimüslimlerin yaş durumlarını ve o dönemin imkan ve gerekleri çerçevesinde şahısların daha kolay tanınmasında referans olarak alınmak amacıyla defterlere kaydedilen fizikî özelliklerine dair bilgiler verdik. Yine incelediğimiz toplumda kullanılan isimler ve nüfusun gelişiminde önemli bir yere sahip olan çocuk sayılarını da tablo ve grafiklerle vermeye çalıştık.
One of the important sources used in the research on the social and economic history of the Ottoman State is the "People's Books". These records contain information on many aspects, from the taxes they pay to the professions they deal with, from the number of children to the age and health conditions. In this study, we tried to evaluate the economic situation of the non-Muslims living in the Balat Accident according to the number 2919 and 2920 of 1841 and the areas of work in which they dwell, primarily the demographic status of the non-Muslims living in the Balat Accident. In addition, according to the records, we provided information about the age conditions of non-Muslims and the physical characteristics recorded in the records in order to be taken as reference in the easier recognition of persons in the framework of the possibilities and needs of that period. Again, we tried to give the names used in the society we studied and the number of children that played an important role in the development of the population with tables and graphs.
