Abstract:

The main purpose of the present study is to examine the relationships among jealousy, self-esteem, personality characteristics, attachment styles and marital satisfaction. The secondary aim is to investigate how these relationships vary in terms of gender. Then, stepwise regression analyses were carried out for the whole participants and for female and male participants separately. The analyses for all participants revealed only openness to experience as a predictor of emotional jealousy subscale of multidimensional jealousy scale and explained 5.2% of the variance. The analyses performed for only women participants demonstrated openness to experience and extraversion as significant predictors of emotional jealousy sub-scale and explained 19.4% of the variance. In terms of cognitive jealousy subscale, the analyses revealed only extraversion as significant predictor which explained 7% of the variance. Lastly, the analyses carried out for only male participants demonstrated avoidant attachment and responsibility as significant predictors of cognitive jealousy scale. The results are discussed in terms of related theories and earlier research findings.
