Abstract:

Since the methods of translation could not be determined exactly, the first translations made in Arabs were not at the desired level. Works that have been copyrighted in different languages have been translated word for word into Arabic. Since the translators did not have a command of the source and target language at the desired level, they could not translate the copyrighted works in the fields of medicine, astronomy, mathematics and religion into Arabic at the desired level.Câhiz has previously examined these translations made from different languages and determined the mistakes translators have made. He later compiled his work named "Kitâbu'l-Ḥayevân", in which he included his views on translation. He stated that the translator who will translate in this work must know the rules and culture of both Arabic and the foreign language he will translate.However, he stated that it is necessary for the translator to use the most appropriate word in translation and having knowledge about the author of the work he translated is an important issue for a translation at the desired level.He stated that exaggerated and incomprehensible sentences in the work to be translated should be transferred by finding the most appropriate word and phrase in Arabic. Câhiz emphasized that in order for the translator to translate at the desired level, he should not make the same mistakes by examining previous translations. In this context, information was given about Câhiz's views on translation and the features that should be translating and the development of translation activities in the Arab world.
