Abstract:

Textbooks are among the basic resources used in the learning-teaching process. It is very important that the books are prepared in accordance with the level of the students and that they support their learning experiences. The books in question should be prepared by taking into account the "content, language-expression and visual design" qualities. In this research, the texts in the Turkish textbooks of the Ministry of National Education and SDR İpekyolu Publications used in the 2020-2021 academic year were evaluated according to the visual design elements, with an emphasis on the text-visual relationship. Document analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The study was based on Özdemir's (2019) visual design features evaluation criteria. It was analyzed by descriptive analysis. In the research, it was concluded that the visuals of the texts in both textbooks were appropriate and partially appropriate according to the visual design elements. It has been observed that texts visuals are mostly not at a level to reveal or develop students' aesthetic sensitivity. In addition, it has been observed that various visuals are not used in the texts in both textbooks, and only one visual type is generally included. The findings obtained as a result of the research were discussed within the framework of the research objectives and the literature, and suggestions were presented.
