Abstract:

The aim of this study is to compare the skills of 8th grade students to summarize the informational texts they hear and read. In the framework of the study, it was attempted to determine the level of the student’s summary skills and whether it vary according to the field of learning, gender, school success level, the number of books they read monthly, the educational status of parents and their family’s monthly income status. The study is in the scan model and is carried out according to the qualitative research method. The universe of study is composed of 8th-class students in the Mush ili Central District, and the sample is made by 190th-class students who are studying in four official high schools in the same place. Schools in the central district, according to the success results of the "Center Examination Related to Higher Education Institutions" conducted by the Ministry of National Education, the success level is divided into three levels: high, medium, low. To provide numerical proximity, the level of success has been determined by two of the low high schools, one of the other two levels. There are two kinds of information, one reading and one learning. Students are asked to take the text (read/read) in action. The output summaries were evaluated according to the scale of evaluation of the summaries developed by Read (2011). The data obtained was analyzed through the relevant tests (t-Test, One Way Anova) of the IBM SPSS 21.0 package program. At the end of the study, the student’s summary skills differed according to the field of learning, gender, school success level, the number of books they read monthly and their families’ monthly income; and the mother and father’s educational status did not differ. At the end of the study there were several suggestions.
