Abstract:

This study focuses on how the cultural elements in the work of Ahmet Umit's police novel "Istanbul Memory" were translated by the translator to the male language. The main objective of this study is to note that the translation of cultural terms to the male language is a very challenging process, especially in terms of literary text translators, and to provide a critical view of the translation decisions that the translator takes when translating these terms. For this purpose, the translation of cultural terms in the male language has been determined, which of the translation methods Vinay & Darbelnet and Peter Newmark suggests to use primarily. In addition, by moving from the methods of translation mainly preferred by the translator in the translation of cultural terms to the male language, it is revealed in the translation which of Lawrence Venuti’s “Localization” and “Externalization” strategies were adopted as dominant. Furthermore, through the comprehensive analysis and comments made about the translations of cultural terms, it has also been established that the translation prefer to be visible or invisible in the German translation of the relevant novel, whether it is in a culture-oriented or source-oriented approach.
