The loss of power of the Ottoman Empire caused the Western states to covet the Ottoman lands. There was a great struggle between the imperialist states regarding the sharing of the Ottoman lands and thus the Orient Question emerged. The entry of the Ottoman Empire into the First World War caused Britain, France and Russia to share Ottoman lands with secret treaties. Later, it was included in these sharing plans in Italy. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the First World War enabled the sharing plans to be implemented. The Entente Powers shared the lands of the Ottoman Empire with the Treaty of Sèvres signed after the First World War. With this treaty, many restrictions were imposed on the Ottoman Empire and a heavy compensation was imposed. With the capitulations, the Ottoman economy was taken under control, and thus, it was aimed to prevent the Turks from recovering themselves. However, the National Struggle that started in Anatolia under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha did not allow the Treaty of Sevres to be implemented. After the victory of National Struggle, the Treaty of Lausanne was signed in order to re-establish peace between the Allies and Turkey. The elimination of many provisions of the Treaty of Sevres in the Treaty of Lausanne caused various debates in the public opinion of the Entente Powers. The abandonment of the compensation planned to be taken from the Ottoman Empire has occupied the political agenda in Britain. A session was held in the House of Lords on the issue of compensation and many criticisms were directed to the British Government. In this session, some politicians argued that the Ottoman Empire harmed British citizens during the First World War. They criticized the lack of compensation clauses in the Treaty of Lausanne, claiming that there were compensation clauses in the peace treaties made after the war. At the session in the House of Lords, the British Government was accused of failing to defend the rights of British citizens who suffered losses.
