Bu çalışma, basın/belgesel fotoğrafçılığının ‘alan’ını tartışmaktadır. Alan kavramı Fransız kültür ve sosyoloji teorisyeni Pierre Bourdieu’nün öznel ve nesnel belirlenimlerin ötesinde her toplumsal yapılanmanın kendi güç ilişkilerini barındıran, iç dinamikleri değişken ve dinamik mekanlar ve eyleyicilerden oluşan bölünmelerini tarif etmek üzere kullandığı bir terimdir. Bir soruna işaret etmesiyle ya da eleştirel bir sözünün bulunmasıyla belgesel fotoğrafın ya da kamuyu bilgilendirmede ‘doğru’dan yana konumlanışıyla fotomuhabirliğin geleneksel tanımlarında yaşanan buğulanma, muğlaklaşma; yeni bir olgu değildir. Dijital çağa atıfla bilgi ve iletişim teknolojilerinden türeyen yurttaş muhabirliği gibi fenomenlerin ötesinde gerçekliğin sentetik temsillerinin yaratım evrenini adımlamış durumdayız. Fakat görsel üretim sahasında çoğaltım, genişlemenin artmasına paralel olarak sınırları genişler gibi görünmesine rağmen kendi içine kapanmıştır. Bu çalışmada amatör/profesyonel ayrımlarında beliren ölçütler yoluyla belgesel fotoğraf alanındaki sembolik güç ilişkileri tartışılmıştır. Kurumsal çerçeve olarak Dünya Basın Fotoğrafı Vakfının ödül arşivi ve raporlarından yararlanılarak görsel temsil yelpazesinde, kimin çektiği ve kimin çekildiğiyle ilgili denge problemlerinin kaynağı araştırılmıştır. Sonuç olarak görsel üretim araçlarına sahiplikle ekonomik sermayenin, sanatsal formasyonla Batı perspektifinden kültürel sermayenin; dünyanın görsel hikâye dairesini inşa ettiği yorumuna ulaşılmıştır.
This study discusses the 'field' of press/documentary photography. The concept of fthe ield is a term used by the French cultural and sociological theorist Pierre Bourdieu to describe the divisions of each social organization beyond subjective and objective determinations, which contain their own power relations and are composed of dynamic spaces and agents with variable internal dynamics. The fogging and blurring of the traditional definitions of documentary photography, with its pointing to a problem or having a critical voice, or of photojournalism, with its positioning in favor of the 'truth' in informing the public, is not a new phenomenon. Beyond phenomena such as citizen journalism derived from information and communication technologies in reference to the digital age, we have stepped into the universe of the creation of synthetic representations of reality. However, in parallel with the increase in reproduction and expansion in the field of visual production, the practice of documentary photography, which seems to expand its borders, but closes in on itself, draws attention. In this study, symbolic power relations in the field of documentary photography are discussed through the criteria that appear in amateur/professional distinctions. Using the award archive and reports of the World Press Photo Foundation as an institutional framework, the source of the problems of balance in the spectrum of visual representation, who shoots and who is shot, is investigated. As a result, it is concluded that economic capital through ownership of the means of visual production, artistic formation and cultural capital from a Western perspective construct the visual story circle of the world.
