Abstract:

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of an instructional material prepared according to the REACT strategy on 6th grade students' conceptual understanding of "Sound Propagation and Hearing the Sound Different in Different Environments" and the students' opinions on the teaching material and intervention. In the research, a pre-experimental method using a single group was used. Participants of this study consist of 21 13 girls, 8 boys 6th grade students studying in a village school in the Eastern Black Sea Region in the spring semester of 2018-2019 education. The quantitative data of the study were obtained from the two-tier concept test consisting of 12 questions, and the qualitative data from the semi-structured interviews conducted with 6 randomly selected students after the intervention process. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to analyze the pre-test and post-test results of the two-tier concept test, and content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. As a result, in this study, it was determined that REACT strategy of the context-based learning approach positively affected the conceptual understanding of 6th grade students on "Sound Propagation and Hearing the Sound in Different Environments". After the teaching intervention, it was concluded that the participant students generally evaluated the intervention process as nice, fun, understandable, and encouraging to establish a relationship with daily life and to do group work
