Abstract:

This research was conducted to examine whether variables such as age and gender make a significant difference on children's social skills; and variables such as age, education level and working status make a significant difference on empathic skills of mothers. It also examines the relationship between children's social skills and mothers' empathic skills. For this purpose, the research was carried out with mothers and their 103 children attending the kindergartens of state independent kindergartens and state primary schools in Suruç district of Şanlıurfa province. To collect data for the study; “Personal Information Form” was used to obtain demographic information about mothers and children; “Social Skills Scale” to reveal social skill levels of children and “Empathic Skill Scale” to measure empathic skills of mothers. The data were analyzed with the SPPS package program. One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test were used for independent samples according to the number of categories in the analyzes. Tukey HSD test was used to determine which groups caused the significant differences that emerged as a result of the analysis. The relationship between social skills of children and empathy skills of mothers was tested with correlation analysis. As a result of the research, it was found that the social skill level of the child showed a statistically significant difference according to their age and gender (p <0.05); it was observed that the age, educational status and working status of the mothers did not cause a significant difference (p> 0.05) in empathy levels. As a result of the study, it was found that there was no significant relationship between children's social skills and their mothers' empathy skills (p>0.05).
