Bu çalışmada Muş ilinin V arto ilçesinde 1946-1966 yılları arasında gerçekleşen beş deprem incelenmiştir. Tarihi kayıtlar 1575, 1678, 1709 ve 1784 yıllarında da bölgede depremler gerçekleştiğini göstermektedir. 1866 yılında Varto’da gerçekleşen depremde 200 can kaybı olmuştur. 1903 tarihinde Muş’un Malazgirt kazasında gerçekleşen depremde 2.803 kişi hayatını kaybetmiştir. 1946, 1950, 1956, 1957, 1959 ve 1966 yıllarında Varto’da depremler gerçekleşmiştir. Asıl yıkıcı depremler 31 Mayıs 1946 ve 19 Ağustos 1966 yıllarında meydana gelmiştir. 1946 depreminde 839 kişi ölmüş, 349 kişi yaralanmış, 3.000 bina da ağır hasar görmüştür. 1966 yılında can kaybının olduğu üç deprem yaşanmıştır. 7 Mart’ta altı, 11 Temmuz’da 12 can kaybı olmuşken, 19 Ağustos tarihli depremde Varto’da 2.101 kişi hayatını kaybetmiş, 1.246 kişi ise yaralanmıştır. 5.306 bina ya yıkılmış ya da ağır hasar görmüştür. Varto’da Sosyo-ekonomik hayat alt üst olmuş, depremlerin yarattığı tahribat bölgede yıllarca hissedilmiştir. Türkiye’de yaşanan depremler on binlerce insanın hayatını kaybetmesine, yaralanmasına ve yüz binlercesinin evsiz kalmasına neden olmuştur. İnanılmaz boyutlarda maddi ve manevi yıkıma neden olan depremlerin yeterince incelendiğini söylemek zordur. Depremlerin toplumda yarattığı kayıplar çok yönlü incelenmeye muhtaçtır. Geçmişte meydana gelmiş depremlerin incelenmesiyle fert, toplum ve devletin felaket zamanında nasıl bir mücadele sergilediği ortaya koyulabilir. Geçmişin pratiğini ortaya koyan tarih çalışmalarının jeo-bilimlere yol gösterici olacağı muhakkaktır. Depremlerin birçok kez yıkıp harabe haline getirdiği Varto ve çevresi Türkiye’deki deprem gerçeğini acı bir şekilde ortaya koyması bakımından incelenmeye değerdir. Varto ve çevresinde yaşanan depremler, dönemin basınına başvurularak incelenmiştir.
In this study, five earthquakes occurred between 1946 and 1966 in the V Arto district of Muş province were studied. Historical records show that earthquakes occurred in 1575, 1678, 1709 and 1784. In 1866 the earthquake in Varto killed 200 people. In 1903 the earthquake in Mush's Malazgirt accident killed 2,803 people. In 1946, 1950, 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1966, there were earthquakes in Varto. The main devastating earthquakes occurred on May 31, 1946 and August 19, 1966. In 1946, 839 people were killed, 349 were injured and 3,000 buildings were seriously damaged. Three earthquakes in 1966 killed. Six were killed on 7 March, 12 on 11 July, while two were killed in the 19 August earthquake in Varto. 101 people died and 1,246 were injured. 5,306 buildings were either destroyed or seriously damaged. In Varto, socio-economic life has fallen down, the destruction caused by the earthquakes has been felt in the region for years. The earthquakes in Turkey have caused tens of thousands of people to die, wound and hundreds of thousands remain homeless. It is difficult to say that earthquakes that cause material and spiritual destruction in incredible sizes have been sufficiently studied. The loss caused by the earthquakes in society is needed to be examined in a wide range. With the study of the earthquakes that have occurred in the past, it can be revealed how society and the state are fighting at a time of catastrophe. History studies that reveal the practice of the past are likely to be a guide to geoscience. It is worth examining the fact that Varto and its surroundings, which the earthquakes have many times destroyed and destroyed, are painfully revealing the earthquake truth in Turkey. The earthquakes that occurred in Varto and the surrounding area have been studied by the press of the time.

Earthquakes occurred in 1946, 1950, 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1966. The most devastating earthquakes occurred on 31 May 1946 and 19 August 1966. In the 1946 earthquake, 839 people died, 349 people were injured and 3,000 buildings were seriously damaged. In 1966, there were three earthquakes with loss of life. Six people died on March 7 and 12 on July 11. Due to the earthquake on August 19, 2,101 people died and 1,246 people were injured in Varto. 5,306 buildings were either destroyed or severely damaged. The socio-economic life turned upside down in Varto. The damage caused by earthquakes has been felt in the region for years. Earthquakes caused tens of thousands of people to die, get injured and hundreds of thousands became homeless in Turkey. It is difficult to say that earthquakes causing incredible material and nonmaterial destruction have been sufficiently studied. It is necessary to analyze the losses caused by earthquakes in many ways. By examining the earthquakes that occurred in the past, it can be revealed how individuals, society and the state struggled in disaster time. It is certain that historical studies that demonstrate the practice of the past will guide geo-sciences. Varto and surroundings, damaged many times in the past by the earthquakes, are worth examining in that they exemplify the reality of earthquakes in Turkey in a painful way. Earthquakes in Varto and its surroundings were examined by referring to the press of the period.
