The phenomenon of poverty exists since ancient times in human history. At this point, from past to present, poverty has become one of the most important problems of the world societies. Poverty, which dimensions, origins and consequences changed over time, still exists in today's world. Poverty, which is the subject of study by different sciences, is a controversial area. When viewed from this angle, it is necessary to consider social, cultural, and societal realities as well as economic factors when evaluating the phenomenon of poverty. Therefore, poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon in social reality. Capitalist systems developing on a world scale and the accompanying phenomenon of globalization and neoliberalism developing have diversified and deepened poverty. Hence, the increasing urban poverty reflects a very important problem area for the world as well as for Turkey. Today, individuals mostly live in big cities. These cities are also areas where great poverty is emerging. In this context, urban poverty spreads to the social structure of the city and causes social problems and issues that concern the whole society. This study aims to address the phenomenon of poverty in general terms and to evaluate the effects and appearances of urban poverty in the social area and the social problems caused by urban poverty by examining the phenomenon, which has become the reality of cities in Turkey.
