Garip (Forlorn) movement has created an influence on Turkish poetry since 1940s. Although the number of poets who follow this movement’s ideals is decreasing day by day, it is a well known fact that the Garip movement has brought about a change in Turkish poetry by such ideas as non-conformism, simplicity, and talking about daily life in a colloquial way. Halim Şefik Güzelson (1913-1990), known in literary cycles for his personal life rather than his poetry, wanted to be seen as a friend of Orhan Veli Kanık. As well as being his childhood friend, Kanık made a great influence on him in shaping not only his poetry but also his personal life. Halim Şefik Güzelson is best known for his marriage, and for his being a book peddler, as well as for his unique themes, and for his poem Otopsi (Autopsy) in his single book named after that poem, which he wrote upon Kanık’s death. This study, which we consider to be significant in that it shows the impacts of the Garip movement on Turkish poetry, deals with the poet Halim Şefik Güzelson: his personal life and poetry, upon which there are Orhan Veli Kanık’s traces. In this article, there will be a short biography of Halim Şefik Güzelson in order to see Kanık’s impacts on his life and to detect the autobiographical elements in his poetry. His approach to poetry, which was shaped by his way of life, by what he read and experienced, and also by Garip movement and Orhan Veli’s influences, is going to be discussed in subtitles. These discussions include also his views which are different from - but not opposite to – the Garip movement. There will be an emphasis on the impacts of Orhan Veli on Güzelson’s personal life and poetry. There will be made some general evaluations in the conclusion part about Güzelson’s way of poetry and Orhan Veli Kanık’s influences on this poet.
