ORHAN PAMUK’UN ROMANLARINDA KLASİK KİTAP SANATLARI - CLASSICAL BOOK ARTS IN ORHAN PAMUK’S NOVELS

Abstract:

Orhan Pamuk is one of the leading novelists of modern Turkish literature. The author who examines problem of modernization in most of his novels, uses modern and postmodern narrative techniques. Additionally, Pamuk frequently deals with many concepts of Muslim East tradition in the process of formation of his novels. In these literary works, apart from Islamic belief components and religious and mystical texts; the reader also meets with traditional Islamic art understanding and traditional art forms. Classical book arts which consist of calligrahphy, illumination, painting, binding and marbling, take place in Pamuk’s novels in the context of majestic manuscripts prepared for oriental rulers. Those book arts are specially included in Benim Adım Kırmızı extensively. It draws attention that the characteristics, conventions and beliefs which are related with art of painting are narrated through the medium of parables, one of the narrative forms of Eastern literature. In this article, firstly the adventure of the production of these manuscripts is explained in detail. Afterwards, the answer of the question how the author reflects each of these classical arts, is searched. The subject matters like the relationship between the court and the artist, art and God, the problem of style in art, traditional art schools and search for new forms are dealed with. At the end of the article, it’s indicated that in the process of the creating novels, Orhan Pamuk sees the Muslim East tradition as a splendid treasure to utilize. Because of this point of view, he freely uses different forms and themes of the tradition in different contexts. In addition to this it is concluded that Pamuk is impressed by the movement of New Historicism which is formed in postmodern novel approach.
