Usually resulting in death and being maintained all cultures in various ways, mourning is a tradition that has continued until today from the most ancient period of Turkish culture we can keep track of. In particular, mourning emerges because of sadness a person feels for the death of his close person or animal, but also it can be seen a variety of reasons other than death; in the event of separation the loved ones or the country. In such a case, the separation points out a state of impossibility of togetherness as in death. One of the continuing traditions of mourning, depending on the tradition in Turkish culture is lament. Lament is the product of ongoing mourning tradition that is maintained from the earliest period of Turkish culture we can keep track of until today. When defining the genre of lament, it is a necessity to take advantage of the Turkish cultural treasures that even today give place to many cultures and traditions and oral products as Book of Dede Korkut. This paper will focus on laments in book of Dede Korkut. First, general definitions will be considered as made on the genre of lamenting; then laments in the book of Dede Korkut will be evaluated within the context of the narration, and taking into account form and structure, content and functionality laments will be described. Thus it will be tried to offer a contribution the definition of lament one of the oldest types of Turkish folk literature determining the boundaries of it.
