Osmanlı Devleti Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonunda yıkılmış ve Mondros Ateşkes Anlaşmasını imzalamıştır. Mondros Ateşkes Anlaşması’nın 7. maddesi gereğince Osmanlı Devleti’nin toprakları işgal edilmeye başlanmıştır. Osmanlı Devleti’nin güneyinde yer alan Urfa önce İngilizler daha sonra Fransızlar tarafından işgal edilmiştir. Mustafa Kemal Paşa işgallere karşı çıkmış ve ülke genelinde Müdafa-i Hukuk Cemiyetlerinin kurulmasını istemiştir. Urfa’da teşkilatlanmayı sağlamak için Ali Saip Bey’i görevlendirmiştir. Urfa’da kısa zamanda aşiretlerin de desteği alınarak milli kuvvetler oluşturulmuştur. Urfa’yı işgal eden Fransız güçleri ile yapılan mücadele sonunda Urfa kurtulmuştur. Milli mücadelenin sonunda bağımsızlık kazanılmış ve 29 Ekim 1923’te cumhuriyet ilan edilmiştir. Devlet yöneticileri, devletin uzun süre yaşaması için birlik ve beraberliğe önem vermiştir. Bu nedenle cumhuriyet bayramının halk üzerindeki birleştirici özelliğinden yararlanılmıştır.
The Ottoman State was destroyed at the end of World War I and the Mondros Treaty was signed. In accordance with Article 7 of the Mondros Treaty, the territory of the Ottoman State has begun to be occupied. The Urfa, located south of the Ottoman State, was first occupied by the British and then by the French. Mustafa Kemal Pasha opposed the occupations and demanded the establishment of the Mutafa-i Legal Communities throughout the country. He has appointed Mr. Ali Saip to ensure the organization in Urfa. In Urfa, national forces were soon formed with the support of the armed forces. The struggle with the French forces that occupied Urfa ended with Urfa. In the end of the national struggle, the independence was gained and the Republic was declared on 29 October 1923. The governors emphasized the unity and cohesion for the long-term life of the state. This is why the celebration of the Republic has been benefited by the unifying character of the people.
