Halk inanışları, bir kültürün en ilginç ve renkli unsurları arasında yer alır. Halk inanışları, aynı zamanda bir toplumu yakından tanımak ve doğru anlamak için önemli ipuçları sunar. Kunio Yanagita (1875-1962), çağdaş Japon halk biliminin kurucusu kabul edilir. İvate bölgesine ait halk inanışları ve halk hikâyelerini derlediği Tohno Hikâyeleri (1910) isimli çalışması, Japonya’da günümüzde de beğeniyle okunan ve çok satılan kitaplar arasında yer almaktadır. Bu makalede, Tohno Hikâyeleri içinde geçen halk inanışları belli başlıklar altında toplanarak incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.
