Energy is the main input of all economic activities, besides, especially in recent years, energy has become a priority matter for countries due to energy security and environmental issues. In addition, energy sector is considered the crucial sector, in the transition process from linear economy to green and circular economy. Thus, this study examines the overview of the energy sector in Turkey on the 100th anniversary of the Republic. For this purpose, primarily the developments and projections of the energy sector in Turkey are examined and then evaluated with the European Union. This study uses descriptive method as a methodology to present the situation, and as the datasets are supported by the reports, the study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. When the results of the study are examined, the fact that Turkey's energy import dependence is at 70% reveals that Turkey cannot meet the rapidly increasing energy demand. In addition to this situation, the industrial sector is the sector with the highest energy consumption and Turkey's energy projections show that this increase will continue. Another striking result of the study is the rapid increase in the transportation sector, which is 98% dependent on oil over the years. The study also compares these data with the EU. In addition, the energy chapters of the progress/country reports prepared by the EU are evaluated and stated how Turkey complies with EU requirements. In conclusion, structural and urgent transition is required in Turkey’s energy sector depending on the European Green Deal.
