Abstract:

Heavy vehicle drivers are distinguished from other vehicle drivers and other professional drivers due to the characteristics of the vehicle they use, the difficult operating conditions and various factors depending on these conditions. The size and weight of the vehicle used can both increase the risk of fatality and increase the severity of other negative outcomes in the case of a possible accident. For this reason, heavy vehicle drivers are a group that needs to be addressed especially in terms of traffic safety. The purpose of this study is to provide a general framework by compiling these factors which affect the safe driving of heavy vehicle drivers. In terms of traffic safety, it is noteworthy that there are many factors that have an impact on the driving of heavy vehicle drivers. In the present study, these factors were found to be demographic factors, working conditions, driver fatigue, alcohol and substance use, physical conditions and ergonomics, physical health and psychological factors. According to the literature review, it is noteworthy that there are very few studies examining heavy vehicle drivers in Turkey. The present study aims to provide information about the current situation of heavy vehicle drivers in Turkey and it is expected to shed light in studies will do in the future.
