Abstract:

For a series of sentences to be a text, it is required to comply with the seven criteria of textuality such as cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, contextualization, informativeness and intertextuality. If one of these criteria is insufficient, the intended communicative functions will not be able to be performed. In schools, in Turkish textbooks, several texts consisting of many contexts and compositions are presented. For those written texts to carry text value, they must have a number of characteristics. At the top of these features, the textuality criteria which make the text understandable come first. The fact that the texts in Turkish course books comply with the criteria of textuality will make language learning more scientific and systematic. Besides, it will ensure that the daily language of Turkish shall be used according to the rules and in a manner far from corruption. Henceforth, the present study targets to examine the texts in 5th grade Ada Publishing Turkish course book in terms of suitability for criteria of textuality. The present study is a qualitative one, and document analysis was used as data collection technique. In this study, the textuality criteria prepared by İşeri (2010) was employed. Upon examination, the findings were interpreted in tables. As a result, at each of the three types of text (fictive, didactic, poetry) "text-centric features of textuality" are seen that takes less space than other textuality properties.
