Abstract:

In the 11th century, Turkish lexicography began with Divânu Lugati't-Türk, which was written by Kaşgarlı Mahmud to teach Turkish to the Arabs. Many dictionaries have been written in Harezm, Kıpçak and Çağatay, which are other historical periods of the Turkish language. As of the second half of the 19th century, which is called the "Renovation Period", dictionary studies accelerated. As of the 20th century, it is seen that dictionaries prepared with the Western method have begun to be prepared. In the 20th century, Ahmed Vâhid Moran's dictionaries are important among bilingual dictionaries. Ahmed Vâhid Bey, who is the first English-Turkish dictionary writer after Sir James William Redhouse, is the first Turkish lexicographer to write an English-Turkish dictionary, according to the researches done up to now. His dictionaries, which he wrote from 1924 to 1945, were prepared by his daughter Yıldız Moran and continued to be published after his death. These dictionaries, which also provide important data in terms of the Turkish vocabulary of the years they were prepared, are modern dictionaries that can still be used today. In this study, Ahmed Vâhid Moran, one of the important lexicographers of the 20th century, and his dictionaries and lexicography were evaluated.
