Abstract:

Cartoons are among the materials that can be used effectively in the social studies lesson, as they appeal to multiple senses and attract children's attention at a high rate. Cartoons contribute to the concretization and learning of many abstract topics and concepts specific to social studies, especially for children who are transitioning from the concrete operational period to the abstract operational period. Therefore, it is considered essential to illuminate teachers' experiences and views on using cartoons in social studies teaching. In this context, the research aims to examine the use of cartoons in social studies lessons in line with the views and experiences of teachers. The research was designed according to the phenomenology, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 18 social studies teachers who were determined voluntarily agreed to participate in the research. Data were collected with a semi-structured interview form. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis technique. As a result of the research, the general perceptions of the participants about the cartoons were positive; It has been seen that cartoons are used in social studies teaching for the purpose of active participation, drawing attention to the lesson, ensuring the permanence of learning, and value education. Participants stated that they prefer cartoon themes that emphasize cultural values, historical events, social problems, and various historical and natural beauties in the context of social studies teaching. Based on the research findings, it can be said that cartoons can be used in social studies lessons as an effective teaching material.
