Abstract:

It is obvious that including metaphors in the learning process will facilitate learning. In this study, the textbooks used in social studies teaching were examined. In the study, it has been examined in which grade level and in which learning area metaphors are used more frequently and the expression is tried to be embodied. While evaluating the social studies 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade textbooks, the document analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. In the research, it was determined that metaphors were given less place in the transfer of the subjects in the 4th and 5th grade textbooks, whereas the 6th and 7th grade textbooks tried to convey the topics with more metaphors. Based on the fact that metaphors are given less place in the 4th and 5th grade textbooks, it has been found that 6th and 7th grade textbooks can be more effective in concretizing the subjects in their minds. Considering that analogies have a great impact on a subject to be shaped more concretely in the mind, it may be suggested to make revisions and arrangements in the 4th and 5th grade Social Studies textbooks. Thus, it will be possible for students at this grade level to learn more meaningfully and permanently.
