Abstract:

Suleyman Demirel Democracy and Development Museum preserves and reminds the historical, political, cultural, economic, and social memory of a certain period of Turkey's history. In addition, the museum is worth examining because it is one of the examples in Turkey of the presidential museum tradition in western countries. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between collective memory and museum in the example of Suleyman Demirel Democracy and Development Museum. In this study, the construction process, planning, and current situation of the museum are discussed and it was examined that those who came to visit the museum wrote in the visitor’s book. In addition, in order to understand the relationship between collective memory and museum, a survey was carried out with the visitors visiting Suleyman Demirel Democracy and Development Museum in line with this purpose and the results of the survey were analyzed. As a result, Suleyman Demirel Democracy and Development Museum is an important place of memory where the memory of a certain period is preserved both in terms of its location, functionality, mission, and the message it wants to convey, as well as the views of the visitors. In this respect, the museum is a place that reminds the events that are in the collective memory and builds a bridge between the past, present, and future in the public memory.
