1940’lı yıllarda petrol bulunmadan önce Batman, Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesinin Siirt iline bağlı küçük bir kasabaydı. Petrolün bulunması, küçük kasabanın yazgısında köklü dönüşümler yarattı. Raman Dağında bulunan petrol, yerli ve yabancı sermayenin ilgi odağı olurken çevre kırsaldan kasabaya işçi akını başladı. Kırsal ekonomi ve kırsal ekonomi ilişkileri içinde yaşayan bölge insanları, kısa zamanda sanayi ve hizmet sektörüne yöneldi ve kasabanın giderek nüfusu arttı. Yabancı petrol şirketleri, mühendisler ve işçiler kasabaya yerleşmeye başlarken çevrede yaşayan kır nüfusu için yeni iş alanları fırsatı doğuyordu. Bir yandan mühendis ve işçiler için yeni güvenlikli, korunaklı siteler oluşturulurken, diğer yandan ilçe olma yolundaki kasabada iş ve konut piyasasının hacmi genişliyordu. Yeni TPAO (Türkiye Petrol Anonim Ortaklığı) sitesi yüksek güvenlikli, sınıfsal bir mekâna dönüşürken sağlık, eğitim, sanat, eğlence gibi konularda mühendis ve işçi aileleri için maksimum olanaklar sağlıyordu. Şehir olma statüsünü 1990’lı yılların başında elde eden Batman, kentsel panorama açısından adeta iç içe iki şehir görünümü veriyordu. Yüksek duvarlar iç içe şehri ayırırken aynı zamanda modern ve geleneksel mekân arasında kentsel, toplumsal ve kültürel sınırlar çiziyordu. Bu çalışma, genelde Cumhuriyet modernleşmesinin taşradaki mekânsal, kültürel, toplumsal ve ekonomik ilişkilerde yarattığı dönüşümü özelde ise Batman’da petrolün yol açtığı kentleşme biçimini açıklamayı amaçlamıştır. Batman’ın bu ikili kentleşme süreci, yerel gazeteden, yazarlara, resmi kurumlardan sivil toplum örgütlerine kadar birçok konuda kendini gösteren bir olgu olarak göze çarpmaktadır. Söz konusu süreçleri araştırma odağına alan bu çalışmada, kurum ve kuruluşlardan, yerel medya ve yazarların yazılı ve görsel materyalleri kullanılarak çözümlenmiştir. Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi’nde kendine özgü koşullarda kentleşen Batman’ın kent oluşumu ve yapısı kent sosyolojisi açısından açıklanması amaçlanmıştır.
Before the oil was found in the 1940s, Batman was a small town connected to the Siirt province of the southeastern Anadolu region. The discovery of oil has created root transformations in the small town’s literature. The oil found in the Raman mountain became the focus of interest of domestic and foreign capital, while the workers’ flow from the surrounding countryside to the city began. The people of the region living in the rural economy and rural economy relations soon turned to the industry and service sector, and the town’s population increased. While foreign oil companies, engineers and workers began to settle in the city, new business areas were created for the surrounding rural population. On the one hand, new secure, secure sites were created for engineers and workers, while on the other hand, the volume of the business and housing market in the city on the way to become a district was expanding. The new TPAO (Turkey Petroleum Anonymous Partnership) site was transformed into a high-security, class space while providing maximum opportunities for engineers and workers’ families in health, education, art, entertainment. Batman, who gained the status of a city in the early 1990s, had a panoramic view of two cities within the city. While the high walls separated the city from the interior, it also painted the urban, social and cultural boundaries between the modern and traditional spaces. This study, in general, aims to explain the transformation that the modernization of the Republic generates in the spatial, cultural, social and economic relations in the castle, and in particular the form of urbanization that the oil leads to in Batman. Batman’s this bipolar urbanization process is seen as a phenomenon that shows itself in many aspects, from local newspapers, writers, official institutions to civil society organizations. These processes are focused on research in this study, which has been addressed using written and visual materials from institutions and organizations, local media and writers. In the southeastern Anadolu region, Batman's urbanization and structure in its own peculiar circumstances is intended to be explained in terms of urban sociology.
