Abstract:

Detailed research on Turkish-Hungarian cultural relations dating back to ancient times have increased greatly since the 19th century. Turkic studies started in the 1870s and experienced their most intense period in parallel with the relations between the Republic of Türkiye and Hungary as countries that were founded after World War I. The political relations that were established led to the further development of pre-existing cultural relations. Hungarian intellectuals and statesmen saw the victory of the Turkish War of Independence and the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne afterwards as great successes. Gyula Gömbös became the Hungarian prime minister in 1930 and admired Atatürk’s achievements as a contemporary statesman. Gömbös strengthened his friendship with Atatürk by meeting in person and sent him some books and letters because he knew of Atatürk’s works in the fields of history and language. This study aims to contribute to explaining the dimensions of Turkish-Hungarian cultural relations in light of the letters and books Gömbös sent to Atatürk.
