Abstract:

It is known that violence in the school environment is increasing in Turkey and that violence tendency is often associated with the developmental characteristics of adolescence. Therefore, it is important to examine the violent tendencies of adolescents. The present study aims to determine the role of gender, social problem solving and emotional intelligence in explaining the tendency of violence in adolescents. 400 adolescents comprised the sample of the study. As means of data collection in the survey; Personal Information Form, The Violence Tendency Scale, Revised Social Problem Solving Inventory and Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire were used. The results of the study showed that gender, social problem solving and emotional intelligence variables predicted 19% of the participants' violent tendency. As a result of the regression analysis examining the violence tendency of adolescents, it was determined that gender, some of sub-dimensions of social problem solving (negative problem orientation, impulsivity/carelessness style and avoidance style) and some sub-dimensions of emotional intelligence (well-being, emotionality and sociability) were found to be significant predictors. It has been concluded that violence tendency is more common in men and people who have negative styles in social problem solving skills. In addition, according to the findings of this study, it can be said that advanced emotional intelligence is among the protective factors for violence tendency.
