Abstract:

Abstract:

In local history studies within the Ottoman political geography, especially the population and temettuât registers have a significant place. The Ottoman Empire, first conducted a census in 1831 and the male population was recorded in the registers issued as a result of this census. Subsequently, dividend counts were carried out in 1844-45. Those who are obliged to pay taxes in the temettuât registers issued as a result of this census were recorded, their professions, nicknames, titles, properties and real estate, and their tax amounts were shown in detail. These registers are among the important archive documents used in historical research for the first half of the 19th century, as they have all the social and economic data of the region they belong to. Sinirli Neighborhood (Village), which dates back to the Saruhanoğulları Principality and is now connected to the Turgutlu district of Manisa, is an important settlement in Turgutlu and its vicinity for centuries. This study aims at setting forth the social and economic structure of Sinirli Village in the mid-19th century with the data obtained from the temettuât and population registers. It is possible to infer from the registries that the villagers earned their livings from farming and animal husbandry in these years. While wheat, barley, maize, grapes, cotton, tobacco, vetch were heading agricultural crops, cow and buffalo raising was common. We have found no information on raising sheep and goats in Sinirli Village during the investigated period.
