Bu çalışmada 8.-18. yüzyıllarda üretilmiş, Eski Türkçe, Eski Anadolu Türkçesi ve Osmanlı Türkçesi’ni yansıtan çeşitli metinlerde kendi/kendi- biçimbiriminin Türkiye Türkçesi’ndeki beş temel işlevinin tarihsel gelişimi araştırılmaktadır. Başta pekiştirme ve niteleme işlevi taşıyan adcıl bir parçacık olan kendi, daha sonra iyelik, durum ve çokluk ekleri alarak adlaştığından günümüzde dönüşlü adıl, artık adıl ve 3. kişi adılı olarak da kullanılabilmektedir. Eski Türkçe’de benzer işlevler taşıyan öz ise zamanla Türkiye Türkçesi’nde ve Gagavuz Türkçesi’nde dilbilgisel işlevini yitirirken Batı Türkçesi’nin bu iki kolu dışındaki dil ve lehçelerde niteleme, pekiştirme ve dönüşlü adıl işlevlerini korumuştur
