Abstract:

The couples who have made the use of social media part of their daily lives have begun to use social media not only to announce, express their relationships but also to control, monitor and obtain information about their rights. The aim of this study on how social media affects romantic relationships is to measure the role of the Y generation’s social media practices on their behavior in romantic relationships. 406 people who represent the Y generation were surveyed. There is no significant difference between jealousy and supervisory behaviors and gender groups, but the most jealous group is the single and non-related; unmarried couples have more jealousy and supervisory behaviors on social media than married couples. As people age, the tendency to jealous and monitor their partners on social media has decreased.

Abstract:

While social media with its improving technology plays an important role among generations, within the scope of romantic relationship it is highly effective especially between generation Y people. It’s been widely acknowledged that members of generation Y use social media frequently and effectively. Social media has more impact on generation Y than the other generations. This impact is not only limited to activities such as content creation, sharing, socializing, staying connected, interacting, making friends, streaming information, and learning. In fact, along with increasing use of social media, couples are more likely to show their romantic relationships through social media since it is a platform where anybody can show their relationship publicly. Romantic couples who bring social media as a primary part of their daily life, do not only use social media for announcing and expressing their relationships, but also to monitor, control and retrieve information about their partners. This study seeks how social media influences romantic relationships, and seeks the role of social media in romantic practices of genaration Y individuals.
