Abstract:

This study aimed to examine the coursebooks, which are thought to have an important place in values education, in terms of root values in the science curriculum. For this purpose, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade coursebooks used in schools in the 2020-2021 academic years were examined in terms of root values. The study used the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. The coursebooks were pre-read by the researchers and the texts that were thought to contain value expressions were created. The texts created were analyzed simultaneously by two researchers using the "values evaluation scale" and associated with the root values. The findings highlighted that the coursebooks included each of the root values in the science curriculum of each grade level. However, when the distribution of values indicated that there was no homogeneous distribution. While the values of responsibility were found the most in the books, the values that were found the least were the values of justice and honesty. The most value expressions in the books took place in the 5th grade textbooks Texts including values were generally included in lower grades’ coursebooks.
